One of the most asked question I get about brand photoshoots is “what do I bring to my shoot?” There are a lot of different things you can bring with you, and I have a whole section dedicated to this in my brand session guide I give to all my brand clients, but I’ve listed five groups of items below to help you get started.
Grab a notepad and pen, start scrolling, and get ready to fill a box with items perfect for your brand photoshoot.
One // Your products
If you’re struggling to think of what to bring with you to your brand photoshoot, think about what you’re selling. If you sell clay earrings (like the photo above), bring some of your favorite or most popular designs. Whatever it is you sell, bring it along with you. They can be a prop in some of your photos AND you can get some product photography done.
Two // Your packaging
Maybe you just throw your product in a padded yellow envelope and call it done, but I have a feeling that you do a little more than that. If you have special envelopes or branded tape, bring that with you. If you take extra time to write a sweet note to your customers, bring your thank you notes and have a couple photos taken while you write a note.
Potential customers like to see what they’re going to get! Make sure they know how important they are to you by sharing about your packaging process and showing all the special touches you put into it.
Three // Your tools
For each small business owner, “tools” probably means something different. For Kristen (pictured above), her tools were paint, paintbrushes, an easel, and her paint-splattered apron. What tools do you use in your business? Bring them along!
Four // Your laptop
As small business owners, we wear a lot of hats. And some of those hats require us to do things on our computers—emails, marketing, running our online shops, client communication, etc. Your laptop is probably one of your most used tools in your business. So why wouldn’t it show up in some of your photos?
Five // Anything that fits your brand
Daniella (above) brought extra clothing for her brand session because she’s a style coach. Some other examples: a yoga instructor would bring a yoga mat or an interior designer might bring some home decor.
Another way to apply this one is to bring along things that fit your brand, but maybe don’t really apply to your business or the products/services you offer. For example, I like to bring some books along with me to my brand sessions. I don’t sell books, but being a bookworm is part of my brand identity. I connect with a lot of people through this love of mine, so it makes sense to have some photos with books.
So think about your different identities in your brand – mom? coffee lover? world traveler? – and bring things that fit those other identities! This will be different for everyone.
